O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at Wheaton's North High School. The model appeared in commercials for a time before moving out in Los Angeles. O'Grady's first job was to model as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring part on the ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred on several TV shows. She appeared in both the independent and TV-produced films. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady as the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress.
