O'Neil was a student in high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She advanced to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed with her performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the panel of judges. However, she suffered major defeats in the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, followed by the second place. The judges were shocked by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he never fell into the bottom 3. Judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was declared by the Premier Paul Martin immediately.
